Designing and Building Your Own Home? Make Sure To Follow These Tips

Designing and building a home is a long, complex process. And if it’s your first time going through the process, it can be hard to know how to set yourself up for success. What should you do during the design and build process to ensure the final product is the home you want?
A recent article from realtor.com outlined key tips you’ll want to keep in mind when designing and building your own home, including:
- Think timeless—not trendy. The latest home design trend on Instagram might speak to you today—but will it speak to you (or a future buyer) years from now? When you’re designing your home, you want to choose designs and finishes that will stand the test of time—and not something that will feel dated in a year.
- Know where to invest—and where to save. Unless you’re working with an unlimited budget, you’re not going to be able to splurge on every aspect of your home. Look for areas where you can save (for example, going with more budget-friendly appliances)—and splurge on the things that matter (for example, on structural elements like flooring or cabinets, which will be expensive to replace down the line).
- Check in on construction—and check in often. You’re making a huge investment in designing and building your home—and you want to make sure it goes to plan. Check in on construction often to make sure that your home is being built the way you want it—and that you have the opportunity to address any concerns or issues as they happen.
